Without the right preparation, finding a job can be one of the most frustrating tasks in life. One of the most challenging parts of landing a job is preparing for the interview. Start off by reading through the company website. Make sure that your interview is going to help portray a natural suitability for the role.
Communicating during the Interview
Next up, you need to be able to arrive at the interview on time, looking as smart as you can. Come in the door, posture straight, and make sure you deliver a firm handshake and eye contact to the first staff member you meet. Be as polite, as open and as courteous as you can. When the interview begins, your job is to:
- Avoid mumbling at all costs. Be clear with everything that you say.
- Be sharp with your words; avoid using lots of words to say nothing in a bid to sound smart.
- Answer every question with a clear, honest answer. If you have no relevant examples; don’t invent one on the spot! Be honest.
- Ask open-ended questions yourself. Show a commitment and willingness to learn about the role.
- Leave a positive impression, making sure that each answer helps to answer the suitability that was asked for on the original job spec.
Take the time that you need to start putting things in place to answer all of the above. The interviewer will be looking for someone who is passionate, who can answer questions honestly, and who shows a genuine warmth and personality.

One of the main factors about succeeding in an interview, though, is negotiation. If you get to the start where you can start talking about your suitability for the role and contracts, it’s time to be clear about what you want. There is a fine line, though, between being honest about what you think you are worth, and being arrogant.
If you have qualifications and experience far beyond the role you are going for, you can afford to push the boat out and present your case. If you cannot present that level of expertise, though, don’t try and over-sell yourself or argue about a negotiation you have no chance of winning!
